Tips on Technique
The transition to BalancePoint handles should be fairly natural
once the athletes give themselves time to get comfortable. Because
most rowers have practiced literally millions of strokes with standard
handles, nearly any change in the motion will seem unnatural at
first. However, once the athletes have had a week or two of practice,
most athletes will report that the BalancePoint gives them a better
feel at the catch, and a smoother drive through the stroke. Many
coaches comment on cleaner blade-work compared with standard handles
too.
Although many athletes and coaches will adjust their technique
on their own, we have assembled these tips in hopes of easing your
transition.
- Relax both arms and shoulders at the catch
- Keep grip relaxed and wrists straight throughout the
drive and recovery
- Be careful not to bend the inside arm during the first
part of the drive
- Try to think about pushing with both legs at the start
of the drive
- Carry the outside hand slightly lower than the inside
during the recovery
- To feather, push down more with the outside hand and
use the handle like a lever -- resist the temptation to twist
the handle like a screwdriver
- Square the blade by straightening the inside arm
